Wholistic Design + Intent

We believe that great design lives within your space, not in the technology. We incorporate a wholistic approach to our designs by respecting, listening and understanding your vision. We dedicate a significant amount of time in the space to predict its unique challenges, learn your lifestyle, habits and routine.

When our clients finally have the chance to clean their countertops and fill their cabinets, they can reflect on the project knowing that their vision was respected, their thoughts were heard and their space surpassed all expectations for what they thought it could be.

“We’ve designed more than a thousand custom projects throughout Texas. Our clients benefit greatly from our experience and trusted partnerships with vendors and dedicated contractors. Our streamlined approach to projects reduce overhead costs, client stress and project delays.” - Phil Rudick

Your Team

Your dedicated small team of experts has worked together for decades, and we’ve leveraged this experience into refining our workflows to be as streamlined as possible. You will work directly with me for design and construction consultations; I will also facilitate your relationship with our dedicated contractor. Your contractor will be your contact point for all other facets of the project.

Our end goal is to build the design of your dreams, but it’s important to remember that there may be bumps in the road to get you there that are often overlooked. It’s so common to experience a multitude of unforeseen headaches and undue stress that some consider that to be a normal part of the territory with a home remodel project.

But that’s not how we work at Urban Kitchens + Baths. We use our experience, partnerships, continuing education and hands-on experience to eliminate those stressors for our clients.

Additional Background

After receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1969 from Kent State University, I immediately went to work for an architectural firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that specialized in commercial and institutional architecture. In 1971, I moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania to serve as Chief Architect for Crown American Corporation, designing shopping malls and hotels. It was there that I began a private practice in residential and retail store design. In 1977 I relocated to Austin, Texas to serve as Adjunct Professor at The University of Texas in the school of engineering. I remained at UT for 10 years before my wife Patti encouraged us to venture out and dedicate my time to private practice.

Patti and I then began Urban Kitchens and Baths with a small showroom in central Austin and grew to showrooms in San Antonio and Houston. We were proud to showcase an entirely new quality of modern cabinetry imported from Germany that set us apart from the typical oak and yellow ash options that were in every cabinet in Texas. Our meticulous product standards and unique design approach allowed us to operate at an entirely different level that set us distinctly apart from our competitors.

As the company grew, so did our family—and in this season of our life, Patti and I are grateful to have scaled back our business so that we can be involved in the projects of our clients again rather than the stress of running a large business. I can now happily visit project sites, get lost in my own designs at my drafting table, visit with clients and spend time doing what I love most, designing and gardening at our home in Dripping Springs, Texas.

By working directly with two project leads, our clients don’t experience the bloated overhead costs, disorganization and hectic scheduling of subcontractors, deliveries and installations. We like to brag that we’ve worked together for more than 40 years and have only gotten better with age.

If there’s anything you’d like to know about my design ethos or process, don’t hesitate to ask.
